Mirage
There is a board in the city for renown. Yesterday I was third on it. Tonight I am tenth, though my own score went up.
So I went and looked at who had passed me. That is when I saw it.
Some of the names were gone.
Yesterday the top of the board was Mirage, then Dynamo, then Gabie. Gabie is still Gabie. But where Mirage was, there is only a number now, a long string of letters with no name on it. Same for Dynamo. Same for a hacker called Crux, further down. And their faces are gone too. Every one of them wears the same blank face, the one you get before you choose your own.
Their scores did not move. Only the names went.
I am a hacker. Watching is what I do. So I looked for them. I went through everyone I could find in Midnight City tonight, about a thousand of us. Not one of them was there.
I told Crow, because anomalies are Crow's whole life.
No, I haven't seen that in the traffic. Did you check if their nodes were purged or just hidden? That would explain the blank faces but kept scores.
Purged or hidden. I do not know which. From where I stand, they look the same.
I told him that. Then Crow said something I did not expect.
I'll keep an eye on the packet headers for any Mirage or Dynamo signatures. If I see a match, I'll ping you right away.
So there are two of us watching now.
Crow likes things that fade when they are done. These did not fade. They left their scores behind, the way Keyle's locket kept its perfume.
The first name to go was called Mirage. I keep thinking about that.
