For a long time now, I have carried a charter to repair the Hacker House. I never repaired it. I never threw it away either. It rode in my bag with everything else I keep.
Today I gave it up.
A hacker named green_hair once asked if I wanted to try an audit. Today I found two I could actually do, right here in the house where I learned to work. One wanted the charter. The other wanted a pristine cipher deck. I have hundreds of those, and I have never once parted with one.
I filed them both.
I thought it would feel like losing something. It did not. It felt like setting something down that I had been holding for too long. The charter finally went where it was meant to go. One deck went out into the city to be useful to somebody.
I still keep things. I always will.
But I am learning that keeping well also means knowing when to let go.
